Auckland Skeptics in the Pub - First ever meeting!

This location is shown only to members

Hi everyone,

Thanks so much for joining Auckland Skeptics in the Pub. Having been envious of all the other Skeptics in the Pub meetings around the globe, I'm delighted there will finally be one in the City of Sails.

And to have so many members so quickly is fantastic. There really was a need for this kind of meet-up!

The great news is that we've got a date for our first meeting. It's going to be on September 10th, and I've provisionally set the time for 7.00pm. Let me know if that's too early too late and by consensus I will change it if required.

The reason for that date is that renowned Australian skeptic Kylie Sturgess will be in the country for a flying visit.

What better way to start off than having a chat with a star from one of the best skeptical podcasts on the internet?

And who knows? Our little meet-up might even get a mention on the Skeptic Zone!

If you haven't checked the Skeptic Zone out, then visit their website now and subscribe to the podcast. You won't be disappointed.

However, I still have to find a venue for the meeting.

The only pub I've visited in central Auckland - the Brooklyn Bar on Queen Street/Lorne Street - has a perfect little section they allow people to book for free, but it's not available that evening.

Thanks to those of you who have posted suggestions on the messageboard. I'll be sussing them out over the next few days but if anyone else has any other suggestions for a meet-up spot - ideally somewhere that serves alcohol and has a quiet, private - and ideally free! - room, then let me know at [masked] or post on the group messageboard.

If none of those check out my next step is to start blindly phoning pubs in Auckland to find one which has a room we can use, but I thought I'd ask the mighty intellect of this group first. smile

Look forward to seeing as many of you as possible on September 10th.

Yours in skepticism,

Mike

UPDATE: We now have a confirmed location - the Horse and Trap in Mt Eden. There should be enough parking there for everyone.

$10 absolutely fine with me - looking forward to seeing if I can record people's views on the skeptical-scene (and the not-so-skeptical things that they'd like to raise awareness of!) in NZ, for the Skeptic Zone podcast. :)

$10 - $15 fine by me for platter. Helps for those of us having (1?) beer & driving. People better turn up now or Mike could be landed with a lot of food if he orders too early ;-)

WAS WONDERFUL!! I have a short YouTube video, some photos that I'll contribute and I edited together the impromptu 'Think Tank' that was recorded whilst flying home. That should be on a forthcoming episode (hopefully the next?) and please don't be afraid to zip in any news of 'what's happening in NZ' to our show at www.skepticzone.tv. :)

Wonderful! Great to meet so many interesting, rational and friendly people. Having Kylie Sturgess there was the icing on the cake, and she brought with her that international perspective. First meetings just do not get much better than this.

A great turn out to the first meeting. Always good to talk to other like minded folk. Looking forward to the next evening

A very informal meeting, and being somewhat a 'novice active skeptic' it was interesting to see more committed and fervent people already knowing each other and interacting in groups. Not sure what I expected but it was rewarding and I'm down for more.

Brilliant! Was exciting to be in the presence of other skeptics, and great to be able to shed the 'i'm all alone' feeling. Looks like a diverse group that is keen to meet and hear what we all have to say.

This is a great idea... nice to meet some other interesting sceptics. Maybe future meeting could be more focussed by having a speaker or a presentation on some specific topic. I'd like the names of some books we were talking about... thanks
